  • Notes
    • James Petty Apperson, born April 15, 1829, in Henry County, Tenn., was the 3d child of Peter and Elizabeth Petty Apperson. He was taken by his parents to live near Springfield, Green County, Mo., in 1831, where he grew up and received a public school education. He was a friendly person and we can be sure he took part in the usual church, social and civic activities of the community. His family was active in the Baptist Church and his Grandfather, Rev. Ralph Petty at the time was a very prominent Baptist Minister in Kentucky.
James Petty Apperson loved his adopted State of Texas. As told before, Peter Apperson procured land grants, bought out head-rights and land from other settlers until he owned several thousand acres of land and my Grandfather was very helpful to him in management of the large estate. Petty Apperson had his good times and fun too. He liked to dance! After he changed from the Baptist to membership in the Methodist Church he was very opposed to it. His special dancing partner after she arrived in Texas from Illinois in 1848 was Mary Catherine Gray, born November 24,1831 at Butler, Ill., the daughter of Andrew Kincade and Elizabeth Overtreet Gray. The first Gray in America was Alexander who came from Ireland in 1736 and settled in that part of Virginia now in North Carolina.
      14. James APPERSON. Born on April 15, 1827 in Henry, TENNESSEE.
      James married Mary Catherine GRAY.
      They had the following children:
      i. William. Born in 1852 in WOXAHOCHIE, Texas. William died in INFANT.
ii. Franklin THEODORE. Born in 1854 in WOXAHOCHIE, Texas. Franklin THEODORE died in 1924; he was 70.
iii. Alice Elizabeth. Born in 1858 in WOXAHOCHIE, Texas. Alice Elizabeth died in 1944; she was 86.
iv. Edward. Born in 1860 in WOXAHOCHIE, Texas. Edward died in 1925; he was 65.
      74 v. Allen Petty (1862-1925)
vi. ANDRED Peter. Born in 1865. ANDRED Peter died in 1932; he was 67.
By mid-June 1862, it was obvious to the South that the war would be long and every man would have to do his share to save his home and way of life and Grandpa and Uncle Tom Apperson, then only sixteen years old, decided they must enlist. In June 1862, in Dallas County, Texas, the 19th Regiment of the 12th Texas Cavalry was oganized and Company A from Ellis County, known as Parson's Brigade, was organized in September 1862. James Petty and John Thomas Apperson enlisted in Parson's Brigade. After reporting for duty they were sent to Little Rock, Arkansas, to occupy the disputed territory on the St. Francis, White, Arkansas and Mississippi Rivers. They reported to Major General Hindman at Little Rock and were sent to a campe near Cotton Plant, Ark. While in this area they were engaged constantly in active fighting at Marianna, LaGrange and Helena and other Arkansas points. In February 1863, the Regiment was ordered to report to Major General Marmaduke for service in Missouri where they were placed under the command of Col. W.G. Carter, Brigade Commander. Felling in Missouri was bitter between civilians, one side favoring the north and the other the south and the families of some of our Appersons went to Arkansas and others went on farther south to Texas, due to harrassment. In Missouri, the Confederates entered the State with heavy fighting; drove the Union troops to Cape Girardeau, Mo., where they were besieged. However, the northerner received heavy reinforcements so Major General Marmaduke's army was forced to retire to the St. Francis River. The 19th Regiment was prominently engaged and received honorable mention from their commander.
