  • Notes
    • Louisa Jane Apperson, daughter of Peter and Elizabeth Apperson, was born March 1, 1823, in Henry County, Tenn. She grew up in Greene County, Mo. where she was married on September 4, 1840, to William Thompson Ward, born in Tazewell Co., VA in 1812. He was married previously to Elizabeth Price in Virginia and they had a son, Thomas Benton Ward, born in that State. In 1837, William Ward set out to Greene County, Mo., accompanied by his wife and baby. Her parents had gone to Greene County and they were following when the wife died suddenly. The young husband returned to Virgniia to get a colored couple to help with the baby that had been left with a family where the wife died. When he returned with the negro couple, he picked up his son and continued on to Missouri where they moved in with his deceased wife's parents. When William Ward married Louisa Jane Apperson the Price grandparents were permitted to keep his son, Thomas Benton Ward. At the outbreak of the Civil War, the Price's favored the Confederacy and Benton, as he was called, fought on that side. William Ward was opposed to slavery and he and his sons by Louisa Jane found themselves in the Union Army. In spite of this their relationship and love for each other was close. Benton married Margaret Danforth by whom he had three daughters, Ella, Mary Elizabeth and Victoria Alice Ward. He died in 1904 near Strafford, Mo. We do not know when William Ward died but he was still living in 1888 when one of the family from Texas visited him. Louisa Jane Apperson Ward died on April 2, 1854, and was buried on the Ward farm, now owned by a grandson, Walter Ward. The dates of her birth and death were carved on a big rock on the farm by William Ward. William and Louisa Jane Ward had four sons and two daughters, namely:
William Henry Ward, born Oct. 10, 1842; died Oct. 5, 1929.
Thomas Tazewell Ward, born in 1844; death date unknown.
Arch Augustus Ward, born 1847; died in 1912.
Flavius Newport Ward, born in 1848; died 1918.
Elizabeth Jane Ward, born Nov. 25, 1849; deid 12-24-1930.
Nancy Jefferson Ward, born March 27, 1852; tied May 22, 1938.
Louisa Jane Ward and Harriet Nowlin remained in Missouri when their parents, Peter and Elizabeth Apperson, moved to Texas, although later Aunt Harriet did go there.
